12/27/17 - WCSSL 2018 Newsletter

The Washington County Senior Softball Board wishes you a Happy New Year and hope you’re excited to turn your holiday thoughts to softball and helping make 2018 a successful year. This year we will again face several challenges in our drive to get new players, volunteers, rule changes and your votes on how we run the league.

We conducted an online survey with the hope of getting more playing members to participate. We seem to have a core group of 12-18 members at the monthly meetings making the decisions. The result was that only 20 members participated with most being the core group. We will try another survey before the February meeting and ask that you keep an eye on your email or spam folders. It would help if you registered as a member on our web site or verify that we have your correct email. If you did not receive the survey, there is a chance we do not have your correct contact information. It is your responsibility to check your emails and respond if you want to participate. If you are not receiving an email, send us an email with your name, address, and phone number to; www.washingtoncountysoftball@gmail.com

The January WCSSL meeting will be held on the 16th please arrive by 6:00 pm at the Washington County Sheriff’s office. This is the most important meeting of the new year to get volunteer managers to sign up. This year we are thinking of limiting team rosters to 14 players. What that means is that only 84 players will be drafted. Most players agree that 15-16 players on a team is too many. And that moving to 9 inning games was too long to allow everyone three innings of play. The goal is to get back to 8 innings with smaller team sizes and of course we need 2-3 additional managers.

There is a chance that we could get 126 registrations and grow to nine teams. So we will need 3 more managers and a few more sponsors. Please commit in January if you can help the league as a manager. It is not a difficult task. We will decide by the March meeting the number of players that can be drafted.

Also, take note that we have a couple of possible changes that may impact you. We are thinking of eliminating the runner from home plate which means the batter must run to first. In addition, substitute base runners can occur at any time, by anyone, however a team player can only run once an inning. We believe this will end some of the on field disputes about last batted outs and who can be the substitute runner on base.

You can use the attached forms to return your registration. Money will be returned to all players who are not drafted or who withdraw from the draft, prior to the draft. Remember you must register, sign the Waiver Form, and have your bat certified, and make payment to practice

So we have a few changes that need a response from you. Attend the monthly meetings or look for “Survey Monkey” surveys in your email.
